December 25 Last week in 2007We are all enjoying the time off from work and school. The girls were blessed with nice Christmas gifts such as a new computer and a electric keyboard for Rachel. Erika enjoys a bunch of new clothes and her new sidekick II. As for me, I received a new humidor that will hold quite a few cigars. Darla received a new navigation system to help her find her way on the roads. Anyhow, along with all these blessings we are also enjoying various get together's with friends and family. I will probably post a few more pictures when I get to it. Until then! December 05 Summary 2007What has happened in the Schwehr family during 2007? At my first thought, I could not think of anything significant to write but after a bit of thought there were a few things that deserve to be shared. In April, we had the Hennig family from Smithers, British Columbia for a visit with us and it was good to reconnect after so many years. After all, Martin and I have been high-school friends from almost 25 years ago in Germany. Bordering their departure, I started my new job as a database administrator at the State Center Community College District in Fresno. This new job is a dream come true for me since databases are my passion and I have been focusing on database development in my career as a programmer. Along with the enthusiasm that I have for this job I am also blessed with good peers and a supportive boss. This new job also pays for various training such as the SQL-connections technical conference in Las Vegas where, according to Darla, only geeks attended, over 5000 of them, mind you.
The only person in our family able to go on a vacation this year was Rachel who spent 1 ½ months in Germany with my family and had a chance to visit Paris, something she had anticipated for a long time. During her absence, I remodeled her bedroom top to bottom, French style. Rachel returned with my niece Vanessa who spent a few weeks with us while we took her to Disneyland, Pismo Beach and San Francisco. After Vanessa returned to Germany, I had to remodel Erika’s room.
Erika had seen how nice Rachel’s room turned out with new laminate flooring, fresh paint and new baseboards and expected her daddy to do the same for her. During the two remodels I added some wall-cabling for computers and Erika’s videophone. Erika, when not in her nice room on the weekend, spends the week still in Fremont at her boarding school for the deaf and is doing quite well this school year.
Darla had a hard time the last few weeks due to her mother’s sudden heart attack and quick, out-of-town open-heart surgery in Redwood City. This medical scenario was, and still is, putting quite some logistical and financial burdens on our family but we will cope as we always do. The good news is that Evelyn is doing fine but still has some arteries that need to be ‘cleaned’. Darla continues to work at Exceptional Parents Unlimited but has taken on a few new duties and given up others. For instance, Darla is now the webmaster and equipment manager at her organization but enjoys dealing with more technical issues – I do not know where she gets that from.
I wish you all a year of health, wisdom, good relationships, peace and financial blessings and pray that you will receive all these blessings along with the promise of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. June 07 Year 2006After recovering from my lumbar disectomy in December of 2005 I decided to drop some weight. So far I have lost over 45 pounds and plan to keep on going to reach my ideal weight. I decided to improve my current health and maintain my future health I needed to make some life-style changes.
I also graduated from the University of Phoenix with a Masters in Information Systems in April of 2006 and have my commencement on June 17th. Although I accomplished a 3.97 GPA, UoP does not promote honors, thus my diploma won't display this accomplishment. Nevertheless, I am proud to have this Diploma under my belt and after having spent so much time on each college course to emerge with such a high GPA. June 06 Year 2005For me the year of 2005 was a year of pain. During our summer vaccation trip to Bend, Oregon I started having some strong abdominal pain. I finally made it to the hospital to discover that I had a kidney stone and needed to take some strong pain medication until the stone had passed.
Later that year my back started hurting again. This was not unusual as I had inherited herniated disks from my father. What was rather frustrating was that none of my trips to the chiropracter seemed to help. So I decided, after some consultation, to have an operation done that would remove a large amount of disk tissues from within my spine to relieve the pain. This type of operation is still a relatively new procedure and is called a lumbar disectomy (excuse me if I misspelled that one :-)). I am glad I had that operation done as my pain that I had off and on for many years is completely gone. |
